Jazz Note Blog
a href="http://jazznotesdp.blogspot.com/">Jazz Note SDP is a blog devoted primarily to hard bop and especially the body of music produced between the early 50's and the mid-60's. At the center of it all is Miles Davis. This blog is especially aimed at readers who want to build a serious jazz library. I have been invited to contribute to this fine web site, and have done so with an occasional few posts, but most of the content is by its creator friend and supporter of this podcast, Ken Blanchard. This show features tracks from albums highlighted in Jazz Note SDP. Check out the web site, learn about these fine artists and the these albums which will surely enhance your jazz library. Above all, if you dig these tunes, support the music and buy these albums or attend their gigs.

An Hour with Hartley
Connecticut's great jazz pianist Craig Hartley joins us for an evening of great piano jazz. We'll spin some tunes and talk about the jazz scene in Hartford and NYC. You will get a perspective on what it is like to be an aspiring jazz musician from one of the talented area artists. Listen to Craig's fine piano work in a solo, trio and quintet settings. I am particularly pleased to feature the Josh Evans Quintet with a core of great local jazz talent, Josh Evans tr, Craig Hartley p, Dezron Douglas b, Ray McMorrin ts, Curtis Torian dr. For more information on Craig Hartley and to contact him go to his website.

We were out of town for the 4th of July weekend, so it gives me an opportunity to make a podcast of the second hour of the show. For those many listeners of the show that have asked me to podcast the entire show, combine this with the last podcast, and there you have it. There are some great Tenor players represented here, including Eric Alexander, Marcus Strickland, Tim Armacost, Ravi Coltrane, and the master himself, John Coltrane. We also have a beautiful ballad with Miles on muted trumpet.

This show is a tribute to George Carlin who passed away on June 22. Carlin was a genius with words and an innovator in the comedy genre. As one who always stood for his convictions, and would seek the 'line drawn' and cross it for the purpose of advancing his art. Sandwiched between some of Carlins most famous bits are some great jazz tunes. What a hip combination; George Carlin and Jazz!

Tonight's broadcast features some great new piano jazz. Its not your typical piano set. The sound is new and modern. Other than Chick, you may not have heard these artists before. One of the goals of this show is  to introduce new or little known jazz artists to our listening community. We also pay tribute to Esbjorn Svensson the anchor of E.S.T., who passed away in a tragic scuba diving accident this week.

Groove Jazz is what this show is all about, and here is a special groovin' set list dedicated to our Dad's on fathers day. When you talk about Groove Jazz you've got to include the Hammond B3, and we have lots of it in tonight's show.
Playlists and more music are available at: In The Groove Website. New Guitar and Beyond
Some great new releases from guitar bands, both new and old. It's always exciting for me to unwrap new releases from John McLaughlin and Mike Stern. Rich Goldstien is one of Hartford area's best guitarists that can groove in the style of Wes Montgomery. McLaughlin's new CD Floating Point proves that we all can get along when Eastern culture meets the Western fusion for a new creative musical sound. Also threw in Bonerama, a powerful musical force featuring 4 trombones, tuba, guitar and drums with a New Orleans funky sound all their own.
Playlists and more music are available at: In The Groove Website. Karen Frisk Picks
New England based singer Karen Frisk joins me in Studio A at WHUS to do this weeks show. Besides Karen's vocal stylings from her album How Little We Know, we play several other great jazz singers and players, selected by Karen, like Freddie Cole, Amanda Carr, David Fathead Newman, Huston Person and others. If you reside in New England, check out Karen Frisk upcoming performance at Chan's in Woonsocket Rhode Ishand next Sunday June 8, 8 PM.
Playlists and more music are available at: In The Groove Website. Summer Trane
As the first weekend of the unofficial summer season, we just gotta start the show off with Summertime. We will also do a set of Trane tributes, tracks not by the master himself, but other artists inspired to play his works. From there, we'll just go off to do a free form show, tracks that just have a summer feel.

We are really going to mix it up tonight. Some new fusion from Eldar and a brand new release from John McLaughlin, some jazzy arrangements of originals by Bjork from Travis Sullivan, some latin, hard-bop and more.
Playlists and more music are available at: In The Groove Website. Jazz-Latin
Maybe I should be calling this show Latin-Jazz, but to me this is Jazz, performed by musicians surrounded by Latin culture and influences. I am not an expert in latin music by any means. In the 70's, Carlos Santana introduced the Latin sound to rock fans. Gato Barbieri was fusing jazz music with his Argentinan latin roots. More recently Jerry Gonzalez and the Fort Apache band began playing jazz standards and originals with distinct latin arrangements. New artists like Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and Insight led by Zaccai and Luques Curtis are continuing that trend.

This show features the modern sounds of jazz music. These musicians are grounded in the tradition of be-bop and jazz, but have fused their sound with electronics, sampling and funky rhythms. They have pushed the envelope beyond traditional jazz forms as the great ones like Miles and Trane have in the past. This is the future of the Jazz idiom.

Many of our local Jazz artists have made the leap to playing in prestigious New York City venues. Some have moved there in hopes of pursuing the dream of making a steady living, and playing jazz with the greats. This show is all about that Hartford area connection to the City. We are indeed lucky to be only a couple hours train ride and cab fare to places like the Village Vanguard, Jazz Standard, Blue Note Cafe and more. There are also many jazz mentors to give these kids their big break in the jazz scene. Most importantly, we have the cats with the chops that can play and know how to swing with the best of them.

Just some music I've been listening to. Another couple of days hitting the jazz clubs in NYC this week. Got to see some great acts such as Steve Turre, EJ Strickland and others. Locally caught a great jazz jam led by Steve Davis. The music just keeps coming. If you are in the area, don't forget Dave Holland's band coming to UCONN's Jorgensen Auditorium this Thursday. We've got them all represented here.

Radiothon has ended, so we'll go back to just playing jazz. This week was the final push for donations to WHUS, and with the support of our podcast listeners, this show met its fundraising goals. I've edited out most of the pleas for donations, so there are some abrupt edits in my mic breaks. As for the music, there is a wide variety of jazz styles represented here. A couple of albums of note are Frain/Dunlop and a new release from Bobby Watson. I really dig both of these CD's and you will be hearing more from them in the coming weeks.

The Rob DeSesa Quintet performed live at WHUS Studio A this Saturday morning, and we recorded it live for this podcast. These wonderful dedicated musicians played great compositions by the likes of Coltrane, Rollins, Shorter and more. We were fortunate to have the WHUS engineer on-hand, so the audio quality is fantastic, and I ripped it at a much higher bit-rate than usual. I hope you enjoy this special live performance by these talented artists.

The Hartford area jazz scene has become a beautiful thing to behold. Last night's event at Firehouse 12 in New Haven with the Dezron Douglas Quintet is a testament to that fact. These great artists that we have been following for years, have grown from kids learning the craft of jazz music to accomplished performers, leaders and mentors to a new crop of jazz students. This show celebrates the Hartford area jazz scene. Dig it, some day these guys will be jazz legends like their mentor Jackie McLean.
